Infected Tooth: Can I Get an Implant?

Question:

Dina asks:

I have had an infection in a lower molar for over a year, but did not do anything about it as I was pregnant and then nursing. I know that probably wasn't the smartest thing to do, but I waited 10 years for that baby! Anyway, I kept the area very clean, and I am now wanting to have the tooth extracted and a dental implant placed. Can I do the implant now, or have I waited too long and lost too much bone? Anything I should do about the infected tooth before the implant is placed?

Hi Dina,

Congratulations on the baby! No need to worry, the waiting time should not effect your implant therapy.

However, the process is that you will need to get the infected tooth out first, have the socket grafted and wait about 3 months for everything to heal. Then it will be time to get the implant.
