Helen asks:
Is Bone grafting a standard process for dental implants? I am thinking of having dental implants butt I am scared of the bone-grafting. What are the risks and potential complications? Do I really need it?
Hi Helen,
Bone grafting is a commonly performed in conjunction with dental implant placement, but not always. Your individual situation will dictate if it is necessary or not.
As far as the risks and complications, should your surgeon recommend bone grafting, they are minimal and usually similar to those associated with any surgery in the mouth. Grafts can come from various sources – yourself, a cadaver, an animal such as a cow, or synthetic.
You should speak with your surgeon to see what is most appropriate for you.
