Expert Advice for Dental Implants

How Much Time After Bone Grafting Can I Get Dental Implants?

Question:

Keith asks:

For 15 years I have been wearing a full upper denture ( I am 59 yeas old). 7 days ago I had 6 dental implants placed in my upper jaw including 2 bone-grafts. 2 days ago (5 days after the procedure) I went in to have my upper denture (which I've been wearing for 15 years) re-adjusted to accommodate and fit over my implants until they heal. I have heard that when bone grafting is included the time needed before placement of teeth on implants should be 6 to 8 months. I have been told 3 months. In your opinion - How much time should pass before placement of teeth on implants?

Hi Keith,

It depends on the primary stability of the implants on the day of placement and the type of graft used. If the implants had good primary stability and the grafting was done just to augment the ridge in a thin area you should be ok. Otherwise, I tend to wait 6 months to make sure that the graft has had adequate time to heal before the implants are loaded. You should discuss your specific situation with your dentist.
