Hi Ira,

Most dental implants do in fact last a lifetime.

However, medical health does play a role; if the person is a diabetic or smoker, this may reduce the longevity. In addition, some patients are heavy grinders (bruxers) which can also affect the implant.

Furthermore, it depends on the prognosis that can usually be determined before the implant is even placed, i.e. bone quality, and volume.

In the 25 years that I have been placing implants I have only lost 2 after the first year, and even in the first year the loss has been less than 2%. So if placed properly very few implants have to be removed once they have integrated.
