Barbara asks:
I have just had two sinus lifts and grafting and have not been able to get dental implants. The graft material did not create bone, but just disappeared in both cases. What is the reason for this? I want implants so my dentures fit properly. What else can I do? I am 57 and in great health.
Hi Barbara,
Sinus augmentation is a relatively predictable procedure. If particulate graft material did not work well in your case, block grafting with simultaneous dental implant placement could be an alternative. Adding PRP (platelet Rich Plasma) harvested from your own platelets at the time of grafting also stimulates bone growth.
I would discuss these alternatives with your surgeon. If he or she feels you are not an implant candidate, I would definitely obtain at least two more opinions – from an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon and a Periodontist experienced with these types of situations. In our office, we perform several sinus augmentations each month. Finding a surgeon who is experienced may be of considerable assistance for you. With the technology we have at our disposal today, a suitable procedure should be available for you.
