How Many Implants are Needed to Support a Denture?

Question:

I had two dental implants fitted five years ago to stabilise an upper denture. I have detected a slight movement in one of them recently. Does this mean it is failing?

Dear Gerard,

In my opinion, two (2) dental implants are NOT sufficient to support an upper denture. The upper arch has softer bone and a lot of forces. It is not surprising that one implant is loose. The literature supports connecting dental implants for increased stability.

At this point you could have more implants placed to help take up the load, and even have them connected with a bar to support a new denture. Usually if an implant becomes loose it is not a good sign. It is also a possibility that the implant attachment is loose and not the implant itself.

I would advise you to go see a dentist to better analyze the situation.

I have a upper denture of 10 teeth only -had 2 implants in the middle will this support my denture?-Ihad metal attachments to three of my teeth on natural roots and these had to be replaced with the implants--how secure will this be?
