Is it Better to Do a Bone Graft at Time of Tooth Extraction or Wait?

Question:

Gina asks:
Is it better to get a bone graft at the time of extraction or should I wait for a few months after? I've heard mixed opinions on this. This is for a tooth with low grade infection causing bone loss.

Hi Gina,

Yes, it is best to graft at the time of the tooth extraction, or within a small time frame less than 1 month.

If you go beyond the one-month time frame, you risk increase bone loss- resorption. Thorough debridement (cleaning) of the infection will minimize most post- extraction complications. My philosophy is that if we can accomplish more at one visit with predictability, than why subject my patient to secondary procedures.
