Toby asks:
I have heard that there are different methods of extracting teeth, one which is called the atraumatic method? What is this and does it or any other method actually preserve bone?
Hi Toby,
Yes there is a difference between different methods of extracting teeth. Basically, you want to remove the tooth as atraumatically as possible to preserve bone on the lip side and on the tongue side of the mouth.
Your dentist will use special instruments to expand the ligament that surrounds the tooth and the jaw. Then there are many other devices to remove the tooth without removing bone around the tooth. If too much bone is removed from the area where the tooth was, it may slow the healing process.
