Cathleen asks:
I have primary Sjogren's disease. Upon review, I see that Sjogren's patients have real difficulties with dentures due to saliva loss and some issue with bone resorption, which I haven't been familiar with before. Could I support dentures with implants, especially an upper denture because I do not want a full palate denture? If I have implants can I remove the dentures at night?
Hi Cathleen,
You are correct that saliva loss and bone resorption is a concern in patients with Sjogern's disease.
But, you may still be able to get an implant-supported denture. In order for your dentist to evaluate the amount of bone that you have available for an implant-supported denture, he will prescribe a cat scan of both the upper and lower jaws - this will give him the information necessary to make a correct diagnosis for implants.
If you wish, such implant-supported overdentures may be removed at night. Your doctor will advise you on this.
Good luck.
