Renee asks:
I am looking for advice. I have had dentures for 3.5 years now. But, I seem to be allergic to denture. All the dentures adhesives out there make me very sick and my teeth make my mouth blister, and swell up alot. I cannot eat bread at all with dentures. I eat almost all my meals without my teeth. Several dentists have recommended implants. Is this a good option for me? Implants seem very expensive. Are there affordable permanent options for my situation?
Dear Renee:
Dentures are made with pink acrylic resin that replaces the missing gum tissue. Some individuals exhibit inflammation of the tissues on contact, and rarely, allergic reactions.
If you have a soft tissue reaction from the acrylic, then when designing the new prosthesis (the new teeth), your dentist would need to use a different pink material or use pink porcelain to keep the teeth the right length.
A dental implant-supported prosthesis would allow you to eat anything you haven't been able to eat with your dentures. You would not have to have the palate covered with the acrylic and you will be able to chew and taste your food better.
You would need six to eight implants to support the prosthesis and the procedure is not cheap, but the rewards are worth the cost.
Most dentists will be able to offer you different payment plans and options to make the procedure affordable to you.
Good luck, and I hope my advise will help you make the right decision for you.
