Dental Implant Infection: Is this Possible?

Is there a risk of getting an infection from a dental implant? If so, what are the signs of this and can the implant be removed? Thanks.

Hi Connie,

As with any surgical procedure there can be a risk of infection with dental implants. However, your surgeon will prescribe prophylactic antibiotics to prevent the possibility of infection from dental implant surgery.

The signs of infection from dental implant surgery, should this occur, range from swelling in the area, to drainage, and general discomfort. If you experience any of these, you should contact your surgeon immediately. In a worst case, you are correct, that the dental implant can be removed.
