After extensive reading of the online postings, I am still confused in the midst of the battle of "conventional" versus "Mini-implants," and struggling as to which direction to go. My basic question is are mini implants or small diameter implants suitable for Maxillas (upper jaw)?

Hi Antonio,

There are several companies currently manufacturing mini implants. The small diameter of the implants is useful in very narrow spaces. These mini implants are also of value in areas of very dense bone , such as the lower jaw in the anterior (front), to aid in retaining a denture.

The upper jaw presents a particular challenge. The bone - as a general rule - is less dense. When several small diameter implants are placed in the upper jaw, they can be used to help retain a denture. Retain, in this case means helping the denture to stay in place. If your goal is to eliminate a removable appliance or eliminate the palate of your denture, then I would suggest you consider implants of a conventional diameter.

In summary, mini implants can help with the retention of a conventional denture. Standard diameter implants can provide support instead of just retention.

Of course, each case is different and without reviewing your (or any) particular case, it is not possible to offer specific treatment recommendations. I would suggest you find a surgeon and a restorative dentist and discuss the specific planning of your case.
