Sinus Problems from Implants?

Question:

Karen asks:

I'm 61 years old and I am considering getting 2 implants in my upper right side of my mouth. However, I am concerned about possible risks of developing sinus problems. I have suffered from gum disease for several years, though it's stabilized for the last number of years (especially since I quit smoking 3 years ago). Should I be concerned about sinus problems?

Dear Karen:

You did not mention whether you need a sinus graft in the area where the implants will be placed. If you have sinus problems and you need a sinus graft, a sinus graft surgery is contraindicated unless the sinus problem is cured and verified with a Ct Scan. Then a sinus graft is a predictable procedure.

If the implant surgery does not involve the sinus, then placing implants would not put you at risk of a sinus infection.

Not smoking also eliminates another factor that could give you problems with your gums and the implants.

Good luck!
