Expert Advice for Dental Implants

If I Took Fosamax Can I Get Implants?

Question:

Rhoda asks:

I have taken Fosamax for 13 years and now I'm thinking about getting 3 implants in lower jaw. I am concerned about proceeding with the implants due to the risk of osteonecrosis of the jaw and other complications. Should I be concerned? Is a bridge a better option in my case?

Hi Rhoda,

You are correct about your concern regarding osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ), especially if you have taken Fosamax medication for thirteen years.

In susceptible individuals, the lesions are very painful and difficult to control. The bone dies and never heals properly.

The proper protocol is to have a thorough dental examination and oral examination by a highly qualified dentist, and any necessary oral surgical procedures be completed at least six months prior to taking medications such as Fosamax. Implant treatment is instituted at this time as well, prior to taking the medication.

Hope this helps. Good luck.
