Anesthesia: What Kind is Needed for Implant Surgery?

Question:

Randi asks:

What kind of anesthesia should I have for dental implant or a bone graft? The dentist will be taking bone from right side of jaw to put into bottom left jaw for third tooth from the back. I have had many root canals with locals. I am curious as to what kind of anesthesia is needed for implant and/or bone graft surgery?

Hi Randi,

The most common form of anesthesia for dental implant surgery is local lidocaine injections. It’s the same anesthesia that used for any routine dental work. If a procedure is complicated, will take an extended time or further management of the patient is required, IV or oral sedation can be used.
