Ed asks:

I am considering dental implants and I would like to know what are the advantages and disadvantages of various kinds of implants? How does one go about choosing what implants are best for them? Do dentists tend to work with various types/makes depending on the needs of the patient? Thanks.

Hi Ed,

There is really only one "type" of dental implant design, "screw"-type implants, that is utilized today, although there are many implant systems that utilize this basic type of design. The “screw” type implants are the most accepted method of tooth replacement. The advantages of this design are that it has a 95-98% success rate and the ease of prosthetic replacement.

In terms of the specific type of implant system you will use, your surgeon will decide which implant system to use for your specific needs. Most experienced surgeons work with a few different types of systems to suit the needs of their patients.
