Prosthesis on Implants Became Loose: Is this Common?

Question:

Tom asks:
I have six implants holding my upper prosthesis. Since about 10 months ago, I have had to go back to my doctor three times now because the prosthesis became loose. I was told that the cement being used was of a certain strength and they had to strengthen it based upon each loosening. My question is -- is what I am going thru common? I'm wondering what the percentage might be of people who have their prosthesis loosen as opposed to staying tight for years? Or do I have a defective prosthesis or improper installation?

Hi Tom,

Loosening of prosthesis can be due to several common reasons:
1. Abutment shape (height and parallelism)
2. type of cement
3. Occlusion (bite scheme- usually the most common source) 4. Poor fitting prosthesis over the abutments.

Each one of these factors should be evaluated and corrected.

A consultation with a prosthodontist may be helpful as some times there may be complex issues causing the loosening.
