Implant Overdenture is Loose: What Can I Do?

Question:

Sharon asks:

My dental implants are very old. I have 2 implants on each side of my upper jaw with a gold bar between them. These bars snap into small clasps inside my over denture. Recently, after the denture became loose, my (new) dentist ordered a replacement clasp which provided a nice tight fit again. However the denture was again loose after just a week. What are my options?

loose overdenture

It sounds to me that the denture fit or bite may be the issue. There are several things to check:

1. Accuracy of the dentures fit on the ridge
2. Balance of the occlusion (bite)
3. Clips and components where the overdenture sits on the implants- to make sure they are tight and resilient
4. The attachments themselves to make sure they have proper retention and friction.

Hope this is helpful

loose overdenture

Hi Sharon,
I agree with everything Dr. Kazemi suggested and just wanted to add one more thing. If the implants are very old as you indicated, the gold bars may be worn from many years of service. If this is the case they may have lost their original shape and the new clasps will not fit them as they did originally. In that case, and assuming that the implants are stable, new bars will probably have to be fabricated.

Loose overdenture

Without having the opportunity of looking at you personally, I have to say that it could be different things causing the denture to be loose so soon.
The denture may be tissue supported and need a reline.
If not the new clips must be evaluated to determine what caused them to fail prematurely.
Talk to your dentist to see if he can determine the reason and correct the problem.
Good luck!

loosened up too quickly

Sharon,

Sounds like a problem I see with a denture that needs to be relined. I'd try a reline first and pick up the snaps again and then check the occlusion or bite for appropriate contacts. It might be time for a new denture as well or even a different style of clasp.

Good Luck,

Dr. Ben
