Implant Supported Upper Dentures: Success Rate?

Question:

Anne from CT asks:

I am getting implant-secured upper dentures. My dentist says I need 6 mini implants and a sinus lift on the right and left sides since I don't have enough bone there to securely hold the implants and denture. Is there a high success rate for this procedure? Can I expect several years of good function with this?

Implant Supported Upper Dentures: Success Rate?

Answered By: Dr. Michael Tischler - Woodstock , NY

Anne,

In my practice I prefer to splint implants together so that the denture is sitting on the bar instead of the tissue. When this occurs it is more secure and you avoid future bone loss from affecting the implants as the denture settles and needs to be relined.

In general, the larger the implant the better for support so in that regard, a mini implant isn't as good as a 3.5mm to 5mm implant. In the upper arch the bone is softer, and for a long term situation I would much rather see a 3.5mm to 5mm implant there and at least six in number splinted.

Another alternative would be a screw retained non- removable bridge with 6 implants to avoid grafting the sinuses at all.
