All On 4 or Mini Dental Implants?

Question:

Karol from AZ asks:

I am interested in full denture replacement with dental implants. Could you please explain to me what the difference is between the mini dental implants option and the all on four implants? Which has a higher success rate? Is there a difference in prices? Thank you.

all-on-4 vs. mini implants

Hi Karol

You are "comparing apples and oranges" here. Generally speaking, mini implants are used in a case where there is insufficient bone to place conventional sized(diameter) implants. Often they support a REMOVABLE prosthesis, like a full denture, and additional support is gained from the denture base. The "All-on-4" technique uses larger diameter implants (standard size), placing them at angles to maximize support from the bone that is available. The prosthesis is typically NOT REMOVABLE, and does not rely on the surrounding tissues (i.e. the palate) for support, so it is less bulky and more natural feeling. Additionally, when the technique is performed as intended, you leave the day the implants are placed with your provisional "fixed" bridge in place, and you can immediately start to eat and smile again with confidence. This is known as "immediate function" and is often very desirable to patients. Costs will be higher for this option, but again, you are comparing two very different things.

Good luck!!
