David from FL asks:
Can a CT scan show the density of the bone? An artifical bone graft was unsatisfactory, so I now have donor bone in place. Are CT scans 100% accurate in evaluating the quality of the integrated bone?

Are CT Scans Accurate in Evaluating the Quality of bone?
Dear David:
Yes, CT scans can show both the quantity and the quality of bone.
The dentist reading the scan obtains a reading of the density or quality of the bone in Hounsfield units, which is a standard devised by comparing the density of the particular tissue with that of water.
Sometimes a bone graft dors not yield the results we would like and an additional grafting procedure is necessary.
Rest assured that the best way to determine the amount of bone obtained after grafting without surgically opening the site is with a volumetric conebeam CT scan.
Good Luck!
