Talya asks:
I've gone to two different dentists to discuss my dental implant treatment plan. One suggested a screw implant, while another recommended cement-retained. I cannot understand what the difference is or really what the benefits are of one over another. Can you please help me? What are positives and negatives of each approach in plain English. Thanks.

Screw vs. Cement-Retained for My Implants?
Dear Talya:
The simpler and preferred way to restore implants to replace single teeth is using a cement-retained restoration.
This is similar to the conventional crown and bridge procedures that dentists have been doing very successfully for a long time.
There are still cases where the dentist needs to do a screw-retained restoration for an implant, such as when there is not enough room for doing a cementable restoration, but for routine cases a cementable restoration is the best choice.
Good luck.

Tayla, I would definitely
Tayla, I would definitely agree with Dr Boudet. If you are a candidate for cementable crown I would go that way as it the most aesthetic approach. With the screw retained there will be an area in the center (or inside of your mouth)of the tooth that may not be the most attractive. But if you have a space problem this is the only way to make a implant work.
Best bet is to look at the credential of the dentist doing your work. If they have asscociate fellow or better yet fellow in the Academy of Implant dentistry, they have taken examinations to prove there competance in implant dentistry. Best is if you can find someone with a Diplomate of the Ameerican Board of Oral Implantalogy/Implant Dentistry.
good luck
