Wendy asks:
My dentist is a very low cost dentist and he said he would charge me $500 to replace my lower front tooth with an implant. The price seems low based on what I have read, so I am wondering if I have should have any concerns. I did do a background check and he has no prior malpractices or anything. So should I just accept the low cost as getting a good deal or look into it further? What kind of information should I try to get to ensure that he is qualified to provide dental implants treatment? Any specific education he should have?
Thanks.

Low Cost Dental Implants: Is the Dentist Qualified?
Dear Wendy:
Replacing a lower front tooth with an implant for only $500 seems like a very low price.
Maybe the dentist is trying to gain the experience and wants to offer you this service at a very attractive cost to you.
If you have concerns, be upfront and ask the dentist any questions you may have. He should be candid with you and give you an honest answer.
It also sounds like he could be using a mini-implant in that area, which carries a slightly higher risk, since the implant is placed and temporized at the same time, and any forces on the implant might not allow it to osseointegrate successfully.
As far as qualifications are concerned, ask him what kind of training he has received. The ABOI and the ICOI have accreditation procedures that award certificates to the dentists that meet those requirements.
We all had to start by placing our first implant some time.
The last question you should ask yourself is if you trust your dentist to do this with your best interest in mind.
Good luck.

Low Cost Implant
Hi Wendy
Experience is a reliable guideline. Ask your dentist for a presentation of cases completed similar to yours. If he will refer you to these patients, they will answer your questions. I routinely offer the names of past patients to
new implant patients, with their permission.
Ask for certificates of training from credible institutions and for continuing education certificates in implantology.
A second opinion is always worthwhile. Find out if your dentist is using a mini implant.
Best of Luck.

Low Cost Implants
Wendy-
Although paying a large amount of money for an implant doesn't guarantee a superlative service, neither does paying a low price signify you will be receiving an inferior service. However, given the component costs for the implant, prosthetic components, lab components, fabrication of a permanent crown, it would seem difficult to me that a dentist could perform this service for profit at the price quoted.
Irregardless of price quoted, the following questions might be appropriate to ask:
1-What is the dentist's implant training, how many implants has the dentist placed, how long has the dentist been placing implants, and does he or she have any hospital or university affiliations?
2-Are materials being used from a peer recognized, dental implant company whose products are routinely used in hospital-based or university-based training programs?
3-Is it a standard implant or a mini-implant? If a mini-implant is being used, why not a standard sized implant? (small space between adjoining teeth could be a viable reason)
4-Is the crown fabricated with porcelain fused to a precious metal, porcelain fused to a non-precious metal, or made out of plastic or acrylic?
Although a negative answer to any of the above may not be a reason to seek another dentist, it might be a good reason to seek a second opinion before you have an artificial device placed in your body. Reparative procedures about failed implants are far more costly and time consuming than having the correct service performed at the onset, so you want to make the correct choice before you start the case.
Good luck with your implant.
