Rebecca asks:
I am currently undergoing dental treatment and have been told some conflicting information. Is it possible to have 4 implants side by side? I have my 4 front teeth missing and have been told by my dentist that it is not possible to have an implant next to another implant. However, I have been researching the topic online and some dentists appear to say that is possible to have 4 implants side by side. What is the correct opinion? Can have 4 implants side by side?
Hi Rebecca,
Great question! You are very wise to research all of your treatment options. Implant dentistry is not an exact science, and there are differences in treatment philosophy as you have stated, from one doctor to another.
It might be possible to place four implants "side by side" as you suggest, but only if ideal circumstances exist. I have documented and published this type of treatment in the dental literature.
In order to determine how many implants are appropriate for your situation, I would recommend a CT (CAT scan) or CBCT (Cone Beam) scan, which will provide a three-dimensional picture of the bone which may be available for implant placement.
In addition, it is advisable to have impressions (molds) made of your upper and lower jaws to understand how much room there is to restore your missing teeth, so that you will have both a functional and cosmetic result!
