Gums are Irritated from Mini Dental Implants: Would a Fixed Hybrid Work Better for Me?

Question:

Diane asks:
I have mini dental implants with snap on dentures. My gums stay irritated and sore even though they fit well and show no sore spots. I just seem to have very sensitive gums (I don't have an allergy to acrylic). Would a fixed hybrid work better for me than the mini dental implants? I would hate to spend that much money and still not be able to wear them comfortably. The fixed hybrid looks like it wouldn't touch the gum tissue. Is this true?

Mini Implants vs. Hybrid Denture

Answered By: Dr. Benjamin D. Oppenheimer - Amherst , NY

Diane,

Mini Implant dentures are intended to be used for additional RETENTION. The gums and bone provide a base for support and stability and the ball shape on the top of the mini implant engages the gasket inside the attachment in the denture to retain it. It is a simple solution that is helpful to most patients with longstanding denture problems.

A hybrid denture is an implant SUPPORTED appliance. It is screwed tightly to the implants and does not shift of move. It is a essentially a fixed appliance. This is a significant difference between the mini dental implant solution that you have...it also is many times more expensive than the mdi denture.

If the main problem is that the gums are sore but you don't have an allergy or sore spots you may be wearing the denture too much. Consider removing the denture for a few hours a day to let the tissue 'breathe'. You may want brush and soak the denture more often or leave the denture out at night. If the denture is more than 5 years old you may consider having it replaced. Over time, bacteria and fungus can accumulate in the denture acrylic and cause tissue irritation. If the denture has changed color or faded or has staining that you cant remove these all may be good indications of excess microorganism presence. One other thing...If the denture was relined to pick up the housing attachments, the reline may be made of a material other than "acrylic" or sealed with a resin that may be irritating. Print this out and take it to your dentist and see if any of these ideas may be helpful.
Hope that Helps,

Dr. Ben :)
