Earl asks:
I am considering having dental implants in my upper left and right jaw where the 1st molars are missing. I probably will need a bone graft as they have been missing for some time. I am due to have a hip replacement in about 3 months. The hospital has sent me some information regarding me donating my bone from the diseased hip. I would like to know if it is possible to use some of this bone from my hip for the bone graft for my dental implants?
Do you feel like a dummy when it comes to dental implants? Don't worry. We can help. Below are popular posts for those just starting out with implants.
Autogenous bone graft
Hi Earl,
If the hip graft could be harvested from a pristine area of the Iliac crest (uninfected) you would benefit from harvesting some of your own progenetor cells. It would be best to use this material as soon as possible.
If the quality or timliness of the graft is in question there are many proven, quality osteoinductive and osteoconductive materials on the market.
Best of Luck

hip bone for dental implants
Hi
Hip bone can certainly be used for any grafting needs for implants. If the opportunity is there to access it, certainly can be done. However, for small areas of bone grafting, other techniques are simpler- such as use of combination bone from your own jaw and synthetic calcified materials.
