Dear Kathy,

In a situation like you mention, often an implant can be placed immediately at the time of extraction. When this is done, the implant is there for appearance and is not to be used for biting for around 3 months. This is called non functional immediate placement.

If a tooth is removed and there is substantial bone loss, especially on the outside bone, then a graft might have to be done and allowed to heal for 4-6 months. If there is infection associated with a tooth then there is usually bone loss and this would necessitate grafting.
