Caroline asks:
Hi, I need to have my lower left second molar extracted due to a failed dental treatment. I'd like an implant in that area, but I am aware of the risks of nerve damage. An oral surgeon told me that I could have bone grafting and then a 10mm nobel biocare implant placed, which he said would give a good long-term result. My question is: Is this sound advice or is it better to avoid possible complications and simply leave the area open? Mmany Thanks
Dear Caroline,
Studies have shown that 10mm dental implants, regardless of the name brand, have excellent long term success.
Once bone grafting is completed, have your oral surgeon re-check the amount of bone in the site. If an implant can be placed, a dental implant is the ideal long-term solution.
Leaving the area without a tooth or an implant can lead to possible complications, including drifting or movement of the opposing and adjacent teeth, which would complicate your occlusion.
