Expert Advice for Dental Implants

Harvest My Own Bone for a Bone Graft?

Question:

Joe asks:

I am considering implants to hold a bridge in my upper front. However, I was told by the dentist that I have a large loss of bone in the area and it needs bone graft. He says that cadaver bone will be a 50% success rate for me and recommends that I harvest my own bone for use instead. I don't want to do this because of the exorbitant cost and extra surgery. Any thoughts on this? Thanks.

Dear Joe,

There are many different ways to graft bone in areas that are deficient. The current literature states that autogenous bone, i.e. your own bone, has the highest success rate. However, other grafting materials may work as well in specific locations. I recommend that you seek a second or third opinion to get other ideas and approaches for dealing with the graft site.
