Pre Fab vs. Custom Abutments?

Question:

Maria asks:
Hi,
I am just going to start the whole process of an implant. I would like to know if there is much of a difference between the custom abutment and the prefab abutment. I know the first difference is the price, but what about quality?
Thank you very much for your great help.

Hi Maria

There is no difference in the quality of the two type of abutments. The only difference is that some dentists and dental laboratories prefer custom abutments and some prefer prefab-abutments (abutments that are made to fit using standard size and angulations).

In some instances, prefab abutments are not indicated for use. For example, if you are having multiple implant restored across the upper or lower jaw, custom abutments may be better.

In my office, we prefer to use a prefab abutment when there will be no compromise to aesthetics or function.
